Injection mold repair pricing is not the problem.

A cracked cavity insert or a sheared ejector pin is usually a modest fix in absolute terms — steel, EDM time, a fitting pass. What buyers consistently underprice is the calendar.

A mold problem that’s been going on for 4 weeks isn’t a repair cost. It’s four weeks of zero shots against a production schedule that assumed continuous output.

Run the math on your own program: parts per hour, hours per week, margin per part.

That number — not the repair quote — is what the failure actually cost you. The invoice is a rounding error next to it.

What Actually Happens When a Split-Shop Mold Cracks

Here’s the sequence at a molder without in-house tooling, step by step, because each step eats days you never see quoted.

First, diagnosis. The press operator sees flash, short shots, or a part stuck on the ejector side. The shop pulls the mold and looks at it — but without toolmakers on staff, ‘looks at it’ often means photographing the damage and emailing a repair house for an opinion. That exchange alone can burn two to five days.

Now freight. The mold gets crated and shipped to a third-party repair shop, which might be across the state or across the country. Add transit in both directions.

Then the queue. You’re now one job in someone else’s backlog, behind customers they’ve worked with for years. The repair house didn’t build your mold. They’ve never seen it run. They’re reverse-engineering intent from damaged steel, with no Build-To reference and no relationship to your parts.

Every one of those steps is invisible on the quote and very visible on your ship date.

Or Worse — They Try to Fix It Themselves

The alternative failure mode is quieter. Some molding shops keep a bench grinder, a TIG welder, and one guy who’s ‘pretty handy’ — and they attempt the repair in-house rather than admit the gap.

Weld repair on tool steel without the right process control changes the hardness at the weld zone. A hand-blended parting line that’s off by a thousandth or two shows up as a flash on every shot afterward.

We see versions of this fairly often when molds transfer in: repairs layered on repairs, each one making the next failure more likely. A bad repair doesn’t just delay this run. It shortens the tool’s life.
