Many buyers choose a custom injection molder the way they shop for printer paper.

Do They Own the Presses or Just Broker the Job?

Start with this to quickly filter out brokers.

A real custom injection molder will own the machines that make your parts.

A broker owns a phone and adds markup.

Plenty of shops calling themselves “molders” actually don’t own a single press. But they will take your job, farm it out, and stand between you and the people actually running the steel. Just understand that when something goes wrong on a new tool, and something inevitably always goes wrong, they aren’t going to be the ones who fix it.

Tooling is the only real question mark. Good shops sometimes outsource mold building overseas to manage costs, and that’s fine. The main tell isn’t whether they outsource mold building. It’s whether they can manage your job with hands-on precision.

Someone who has actually stood on the vendor’s floor, not someone who forwards on your drawings and hopes for the best.

Can They Recite Tonnage and Shot Size Cold?

Ask what tonnage range they run and where their shot size caps out.

A shop that knows its own floor will answer you in one breath. ‘We run this range, shot size tops out around here, your part lands in the middle.’ Instant. They live there.

A shop that says ‘let me check with the team and get back to you’ just told you something.

Either you’re talking to a wet-behind-the-ears salesperson with no line of sight to production, or they’re sizing your job against capacity they don’t actually have yet. Either one will cost you later.

This isn’t supposed to be a “gotcha”. It’s just the cheapest competence test you’ll ever run, and it takes one email.

What the Tolerance Talk Sounds Like Before Steel Is Cut

Here’s where the good ones separate. Send your build-to files and tell them your tolerances. Then listen for pushback.

Any custom injection molder worth hiring reads your geometry upfront and tells you where it’s going to fight the process.

  1. “This wall’s too thick; it’ll sink.”
  2. “That tolerance is tighter than the material will hold.”
  3. “This radius adds a slide you don’t need and a few thousand dollars you don’t want to spend.”

A molder who says ‘yep, we can hit all that no problem’ before steel is cut is either not reading your part or planning to bill you for the rework. Tolerances remain in the steel forever. Having a conversation that costs nothing now is the one people rarely have, and it’s unfortunate because it’s also the one that can easily save their program.

How They Run the First Article

The first parts off a new tool tell you everything about how a shop thinks. Ask what their first-article process actually looks like.

You want a real answer. Dimensional inspection against your print, documented, before they run a full cavity of parts you’ll have to scrap. A shop that treats first article as a formality, ‘looks good, we’ll ship it,’ is a shop that finds problems at quantity. That’s the most expensive place to find them.

If you hear ‘PPAP’ or ‘first-article inspection report’ come up in conversation unprompted, great. That’s a shop built around proving your part is right before the real volume runs, not after.

The road less traveled, and the one that keeps your line from shutting down.

Whether They’ll Take Over a Tool That’s in Trouble

Ask if they’ll take a transfer, a tool somebody else built, running badly, that you want to move. The answer is a confidence test.

Brokers won’t touch it. Inheriting another shop’s steel means owning problems you didn’t create, and they have no way to fix what they can’t see. A shop with its own toolroom will ask for the tool, the history, and the last few inspection reports, then tell you straight whether it’s worth moving or worth replacing.

You may not have a transfer today. Ask anyway. How that custom injection molder talks about someone else’s tool tells you how they’ll talk about yours when it’s the one giving them trouble at 2 a.m.

Whether They’ll Ever Tell You “No”

The last filter feels backward. The custom injection molder you want is actually the one who will turn your job down too.

A shop that says yes to everything is telling you their schedule is empty, or that they’ll take the work and sort out capacity later, usually by pushing your dates. When the tool room is booked, a serious shop lets you know. When your part isn’t a fit for how they run, they tell you that too, and point you somewhere better.

Run Your Checklist Before You Get a Quote

None of these six questions mentions price. That’s why they work.

Price matters. It’s just the last number you check, after the other five questions are answered. The cheapest quote from a shop that fails questions one through five is the most expensive decision on the table. Run the test before you compare numbers. A shop that clears all six without flinching has already shown you how it’ll run your program. Most won’t get past question two.
