A quote request looks like the start of the process. It’s actually a test of how resolved your design is, and any molder worth working with can tell within minutes which version they’re reading.
If you’re building a list of questions to ask an injection molding company, start with these — they’re the ones engineers and product owners bring us at the pre-quote stage, answered the way I’d answer them on a call.
What Do You Need From Me to Quote a Part?
A Build-To CAD file (STEP or IGES), the material or the environment the part lives in, realistic annual volumes, and any tolerance or cosmetic callouts — that’s a complete quote package.
Missing pieces don’t stop a quote; they inflate it.
When your molder has to guess at volume or material, the guess gets padded for risk, and you pay for the ambiguity in the number. A PDF print alone forces the most guessing of all.
If you don’t know your material yet, say so and describe the environment instead — UV exposure, chemical contact, load, temperature. That’s enough to work backward to a resin family, and it’s a better starting point than a resin picked from a search result.
I Only Have a Prototype and No CAD — Can You Still Help?
Yes — a physical prototype is enough to start the conversation, but nobody can accurately price tooling or cut steel until the part exists as a Build-To file.
When we quote a mold based on a customer CAD rather than a model, the practical path is to bring the prototype, talk through moldability, then get it modeled.
That means everything from draft angles and uniform walls to gate access.
Getting those into the model on the first pass is worth more than any quote turnaround a shop could promise you.
How Early Should I Involve a Molder?
Before your CAD is final — ideally while wall thicknesses, ribs, and bosses are still negotiable.
A mold is a negative of your part, which means every feature you commit to becomes a machining problem someone has to solve in steel. Undercuts become slides and lifters. Thick sections become sink marks and long cycle times. Zero draft becomes ejection damage. None of these cost anything in a 3D print. In a mold, they all cost money — some on every shot, for the life of the tool — and the worst of them aren’t costs at all. They’re dead ends. The part can’t be molded until they’re fixed.
The expensive projects we see often share a common pattern: the design was finished, validated, and emotionally settled before a molder ever looked at it.
At that point, a design for manufacturability review can’t change the geometry, so it changes the budget instead. The same review three weeks earlier would have moved a rib, thinned a wall, added a degree of draft, and made the tool simpler, cheaper, and faster-cycling for its entire production life.
In injection molding, geometry is cost. The cheapest engineering hours you will ever buy are the ones spent while geometry is still free to change.
Will You Review My Design and Tell Me If It’s Moldable?
Yes, and a molder who won’t should worry you.
A design review before quoting is standard work at any serious plastic injection molding service. Check draft analysis, wall thickness, gate and ejection planning, sink and warp risk.
What separates a real review from a formality is pushback.
A real one comes back with questions and suggested changes — can this boss move, can this wall thin out, does this surface actually need to be cosmetic?
If a review comes back clean with zero questions on a first-revision part, it wasn’t a review. It was a checkbox on the way to your PO, and the problems it skipped will always show themselves in steel.
What Does a Mold Cost?
Mold cost is driven by four things — part size, geometric complexity, cavitation, and steel grade — and all four get set during design, not during quoting.
Size sets the mold base and the press it runs in. Complexity determines how many moving actions the tool needs; every undercut that survives design review becomes a slide or lifter someone has to machine and maintain.
Cavitation is a volume decision — more cavities cost more up front and less per part, so the right answer depends on honest annual numbers, not optimistic ones.
Steel grade and tool class are a lifespan bet. A Class 101 production tool is built for millions of cycles, and you shouldn’t pay for that if you only need thousands.

Will You Take a Small Job? What Size Parts Can You Run?
No minimum order disqualifies you — fit is decided by the part, not the size of the PO.
Small injection molding jobs make sense when there’s engineering in them: bridge production, a complex part in modest volumes, a program with a real trajectory. Where fit breaks down is a commodity part where the lowest per-piece price is the only criterion — no domestic shop wins that job, and any that claims to is planning to make it up somewhere.
On size: our presses run from 55 to 400 tons. Rather than reading that as a spec, use it as a self-assessment. Tonnage tracks projected area — your part’s footprint as seen from the parting line —
. Land under 400 and you’re inside the envelope of most custom molders, including ours. Land over it, and you’ll need a press that few shops keep on the floor — better to learn that before you request quotes, not after.
Do You Build Your Molds In-House?
We can, but we also work with trusted partners depending on each customer’s needs — tool work and injection molding live under one roof, and that matters more after the build than during it.
When capacity or economics point overseas, we outsource and manage those builds hands-on — in person, not over an email thread. We can evaluate a build in our shop, as well.
Either way, the tool comes home to a shop that can tune, repair, and revise it without shipping it anywhere.
